Bridge Railing Design

The Smart Composite Bridge replaced the wooden footbridge in the Library Park of UMR. As a permanent part of the campus environment, a bridge design was desired that will be aesthetically pleasing and will harmonize with its natural surroundings. The railings, as the principle aesthetic component, were designed through a competition that was open to students of all majors at UMR. The most appealing design was selected by a faculty/staff committee and slightly modified for the final structure. The following students were recognized in spring of 1999

Selected Design - Wesley E. Tull, Jr. and Matthew J. Sander, UMR Civil Engineering Undergraduates

Honorable Mention - Seamus McGrath, UMR Electrical Engineering Undergraduate

UMR University Transportation Center sponsored the competition. The winning team was awarded $1000 in scholarship money and a trip for one to Washington D.C. to attend the Transportation Research Board Conference held during the second week of January 2000. The honorable mention student was awarded a $500 scholarship from the Electrical Engineering Department.
